Powell’s Pocketknife – a terrific idea from a terrible war.
Even after lengthy sojourns with Shelby Foote, Ken Burns and others, it’s hard to comprehend the heroism, heartbreak and sheer grisly carnage of the Civil War. One of its consequences was the small army of amputees it created – over 50,000 in number – including John Wesley Powell, explorer of the Grand Canyon. To help them adjust to peacetime life, cutlers created knives like this, which could be opened one-handed off the corner of a pocket or a belt loop due to the unusual, straight razor shape of the blade.
Powell’s Pocketknife is not just a historical artifact – it’s a functional, useful pocketknife you can use for a variety of small jobs today. In addition to the 1 5⁄8" straight blade, it has a 1 1⁄2" clip point blade that’s excellent for slicing, and has a handy thumb hole opening. Blades and bolsters are high-grade 440 stainless steel, handle is maple burlwood, rivets are brass. One of our most unique items ever.
