I bought a similar cap from Duluth Trading last winter and got this one because of some updated features. The velcro is much easier to use with cold hands than the ties, but doesn't look quite as nice. The longer flaps give more protection to your neck and chin, but is not as comfortable. I like the real sweatband in the updated version. One thing I definitely like better in the older version is the shorter brim. On a winter cap the long brim just isn't as nice. All in all this is a well-made versatile winter cap, but I actually like the retro look of the original a little better. This is just personal preference and you won't go wrong with this cap.

I am a trash man, so I am always working outside in the elements. The bill on this hat keeps my glasses dry in the rain and snow, the flaps keeps me warm on my neck, ears, cheeks and under my chin. Sometimes in single digit temperatures, I put a beanie over the skull, and wrap a scarf around my neck, but this hat always keeps me warm and dry wherever it covers.
Bought this cap using user reviews and to the advice to get a medium instead of large to keep hat from coming down over tops of ears when the flaps are up.Normally i would take a large.
Happy with the choice.
I use this hat when plowing snow on my tractor. This winter has been very cold.

The fire hose canvas exterior is tough but supple, and the faux-shearling interior is very comfortable and warm. The ear flaps attach to each other with velcro either over the head when not needed or under the chin to protect the cheeks and ears when the cold wind blows. These are easily deployed and re-fastened with the cap still on the head as the wind and temperature changes. Couldn't ask for better than that!

I drive volunteer ambulance in extremely cold (-20 to -30 degrees F) wind chill. Great for these conditions.

THE EAR FLAPS ARE GOOD NOT GREAT, WORE IT ON A BLUSTERY COLD DAY HERE IN NYC AND THE WIND STILL MANAGE TO GET TO MY EARS, LOOKS LIKE REGULAR OLD EARMUFFS ARE STILL THE BEST PROTECTION FROM COLD WINDS.
