Poor substitute for the old version!

By Scottysan

from Crofton, MD

Pros

  • Flexible Softshell

Cons

  • Not warm
  • Not waterproof
  • Not windproof

Best Uses

  • As a mid layer
  • Mild weather

I used the old version of this coat for several years as an outer layer. It was great, with layering, in all but a driving rain. The new version is nowhere near the coat that it is supposed to have replaced:
* no pit zips
* no cargo, pen, or phone pockets
* not waterproof or windproof
* no nylon shell on most of the coat

In short, this is not a Force Nine jacket at all.
It is almost exactly the same as the basic soft-shell that I got from Duluth for half the price.
And it's going back.

Miss the old version

By Mike

from Pilot Point, AK

Pros

  • Light Weight
  • Mostly Windproof
  • Somewhat Waterpoof
  • Trim Fit For Layering
  • Warm

Cons

  • Bigger Than Old Version
  • Lacking On Inside Pockets
  • no pit zips
  • Stupid Hood

Best Uses

  • Every Day Wear

I live in Bristol Bay Ak, and wear this jacket or the old version nearly every day. I was wearing it as a underlayer at -20 F. and will wear it as a stand alone in the summer. I comute on a ATV, so wind/waterproof is critical to my needs, and the jacket is adequate, either alone, or as a layer. I realy like the flex for freedom of movement. These jackets seem to be good at stain resistance, but are not real tuff. I HATE hoods in general, and this is one of the worst for blocking vision and limiting neck movement. I also am not sure about the zipper, as I have had problems with my older version of this jacket. I am fixing locally as I do not want to loose the jacket which will happen if I send it back to Duluth. They don't fix stuff, they just replace, or refund. So garentee is BULL if you like the jacket or what ever. I have lost all the items that I have sent back. When you get a check, but no item, you are SOL. I wear multiple Duluth iteams every day, and love the design, materials, but the life, excecution, and guarentee does not hold up.

Good jacket!

By Tom

from GR, MI

Bought it for my "nice" coat to wear about. Really like it so far, was super windy here yesterday, but up the hood and good to go. I agree with past comments that the hood could be a bit smaller, but pull the drawstrings in a bit and the hood will stay closer to the neck when down and fit your head better when up. It looks good on, like the drop tail in the back, chest pockets are big enough for a smartphone, so is pocket on sleeve. I don't keep a bunch of junk in them so I personally don't want big huge pockets. Bought on sale too, so a much better deal than Northface/columbia in my opinion.

Best jacket ever

By Rusty

from Portland, USA

Wear this outside, and it keeps me nice and warm. The pocket are great. However I don't care for the hood, it's too big, perhaps a smaller hood would be a great idea. The jacket is great, it does keep me dry when it rains, and keeps the wind off of me when I work outside.

      Cons

        Best Uses

I work with a geophysical company. Its an outside job Rain, snow, wind. It doesn't matter, we work.It is very important to dress accordingly. We don't have the ability to go back to get another jacket. Usually, when you get to the line, you are there all day. You need a jacket that will take care anything mother nature may throw at you.

          Good jacket

          By emily

          from USA

I like the fact the jacket isn't bulky. I can move easily in the jacket. I like the pockets on the jacket too, so I could put my items in there, gloves, cellphone and other odds and ends. I don't like the cord on the back of the hood, I would prefer a tab I could adjust myself, no cord. The jacket keeps me warm as I work outside. It's a good jacket to have, and it's a woman's jacket as well.
