Professional grade woodcarving tools have wood handles an easy to grip. The metal case is rough on top and designed like a box cutter. I am going to return it.

Too delicate for the purpose I bought it.
Gave it away as a present (bought it for myself) and it was received with great happiness. Will buy a more robust knife for my construction job uses.

I really like the convenience that the knife offers. I use the knife as one would normally use a pocket knite- everything from peeling an apple to stripping a wire to opening mail. I was not particulary pleased that the blade loses it's edge so easily and that it is easily nicked. I would be happy to spend a little more for the exact knife with better steel in the blade.

I used it recently to cut Hunan Beef when the plastic knife was too weak. It cut some nylon rope so cleanly that the end didn't need to be melted to stop fraying. Think of it as a long utility knife blade.

Comments about Duluth Trading Folding pocket knife - Japanese Carpenter Knife:

When I first saw the simple construction of this knife I was underwhelmed. Then, I took a closer look and used it for some quick cutting tasks around the house. This is a great knife! Don't let it's simplicity fool you, the hardened steel blade shaped with a long curve easily slices through soft/medium wood and plastic. The blade is very sharp and holds an edge extremely well with minimal care.

I only found two drawbacks: 1) The handle isn't comfortable to hold while cutting at all. The exposed folded steel edge slightly digs into your fingers as you squeeze. 2) Although very minor, there is a little bit of 'play' in the rivet securing the blade. This increased as the knife broke in, but stopped once it got to a certain point.

Overall, this is just a great folding knife to keep handy around the house or in the toolbox.

good blade. eazy one hand open. the only drawback that is see is the handle is "thin". does not look like it would hold up to a lot of pressure. other than that the knife is as described. very nice, very sharp.

Perhaps the blade on my knife isn't the same quality as those writing all the positive reviews. I work in a wholesale florist. My knife was used daily cutting open flower boxes (by cutting tape on edges and the plastic straps), occasionally cutting the stems on a bunch or two of soft stemmed cut flowers and, yes, cutting my apple or pear at lunch.
The blade was originally very sharp and I cut myself pretty good the first week I had it. It has since deteriorated. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to sharpen it with a hand held knife sharpener that works just fine with our standard "floral knives". The blade is discolored and so dull that I can't even cut a piece of paper here on my desk.
