I travel a lot in my RV and have a bunch of hunting dogs with me most of the time. I very often have to let dogs out in the dark to take care of business. I have a headlamp from one of the major outdoor stores which is fine but the beam is like a spotlight - that is what it was designed to be. And, the intensity of the beam is not adjustable. I can just imagine that, to my dogs, the light was like having someone shine a flashlight in your eyes..
Duluth's variable intensity Fenix headlamp is more like a flood light and I can adjust the light to dim when I am close to a dog - such as snapping on a lead - or I can increase the brightness when the dog is out at a distance and need to keep him in sight.
I really like this headlamp.
