Jolly Good Safety Razor sold at Duluth Trading Company gives a shave second only in closeness and smoothness to a barber’s straight (aka “cut throat”) razor, using frugally priced single blades.

Comments about Jolly Good Safety Razor:

Gotta say it, folks; This is the best razor I've ever had. I'll never buy any of those cheapo disposables again. Feels like a million bucks; like a barber shop (cut throat) shave. Once you try it, you'll never go back to those nasty plastic things again! I brag it up at every opportunity. I have a heavy beard and this razor goes through it like a hot knife thru soft butter. Believe me; you'll never use one of those cheap, nasty plastic things again. Try it; I guarantee you'll like it!

Take Your Time and Savor the Shave!

Comments about Jolly Good Safety Razor:

My dad uses and electric shaver, but I gravitated toward blades right from the start. I'm 56 now, and have been shaving with blades (mostly disposable razors) all along. Maybe there's a part of me that's a little "retro." I like the process of shaving with a blade: the lathering, the warm water, the feeling of smooth skin once the whiskers have been shorn....

I think it was that "retro" tendency that prompted me to buy this razor, and I need to preface the rest of this review by saying that I've only had it a few days and have only used it twice.

Will I keep using it? Yes, I definitely will. I'm glad I bought it. However, it comes with caveats.

This razor does give a close shave, but you have to take your time! If you're impatient, if you want a quick shave, then you're far better off using an electric shaver or, at most, a disposable super-safety razor. This style razor exposes more of the blade and requires a little more care in order to avoid nicks and cuts. I think the most important thing is to always, always make sure that your skin is well lubricated. Use a good shaving cream or soap (not the canned foam stuff), keep it wet, and replenish as needed. Take your time, use short strokes, and use a very light touch. Applying more pressure is NOT a good thing.

I use Trader Joe's shaving cream, and find that it works very well. I have also used the old-fashioned shaving soap-and-brush, and if you keep it warm enough, that provides a wonderful shave. The "foam in a can" stuff is not so good when you really need skin protection. Some of the spray gels are better, but shaving cream or soap are better. This extra protection for your skin is essential if you're going to use this kind of double-edged safety razor.

Does it give a closer shave than the pre-packaged super-safety razors? In my personal opinion, no. If used properly, and if you pick the right one, those super-safety razors can equal the shave you'll get with this. I shaved with a Shick Titanium Quattro this morning, and I did better with it than I did with this older style safety razor. The difference, however, may be my own lack of skill with this razor, and my past practice and comfort with the Shick Quattro..

I agree with the reviewer who said that the strong suit of this razor is not necessarily its closer shave, but its cost per blade. In the long run, you should save some money with this razor. Changing blades requires a little extra caution, but is not hard, and the replacement blades are definitely cheaper than disposable refills.

I also like its retro look and feel, and those things make me look forward to shaving with it. I am glad I bought it, and I will definitely keep using it.

My only complaint is that the handle gets a little slippery. I need to rinse it often to make sure I have a positive grip on the thing. Something a little "grippier" would be nice, but would probably not fit the old-fashioned style of this shaver.

The handle length may feel short to new users, but I quickly learned that its dimensions encourage a grip that best suits the razor.

There is a learning curve. If you're willing to accept that, and if you are willing to take your time and savor the process, then I think you will be very happy with this razor.

Jolly good razor indeed. Felt a little small in my hand at first, but I have always been a wet shaver and this gets the job done and the cost of blades makes it a real long term bargain.

I kept prograstinating about buying this razor for years. Once I used it I don't know why I waited so long in the first place. It shaves so close and is very easy to clean. No more banging the razor of the edge of the sink to get the hair out! Also it takes little to no pressure to get a really close shave. I thru out all my other razors!

Comments about Jolly Good Safety Razor:

I use this razor to remove 6 days of growth before I start my rotation at the FD. It takes heavy growth right off and feels great. You do have to go slower and use smaller strokes, if you don't you will be cut or get razor burn. So, take your time and you'll love it.

Comments about Jolly Good Safety Razor:

This is a good razor at a decent price.
The razor shaves very well; is easy to handle; blade changes are simple; design is robust and compact.
Other reviews state that the handle is "small"; it's not small it's short. A razor of this type requires a light touch and the short handle helps to insure you do.
                    Great Razor!
