We needed a new filet knife and I think I found it. Your knife is beautiful to look at and feels good in the hand. I'm looking forward to some tasty treats with the help of this tool.

Comments about Folding Filet Knife - Lake Bemidji Filet Knife:

Unfortunately I was very disappointed in this product. In the catalog the knife was described as a "Lake Bemidji Folding Filet Knife" so I was excited to order it for my dad as a Christmas gift since our family has vacationed at Lake Bemidji. He is rather hard to buy for so I thought this would be a gift that would have a sentimental value. Much to my surprise the knife came in a plain brown cardboard box with no writing on it [*]. The knife itself has no engraving or text on it at all referring it to "Lake Bemidji". So much for my great gift idea:( Maybe if you just want an average filet knife this would be for you.

I gave this to my son who is the owner of Tomky Fishfarms in N.E. Colorado. He can clean his fish on the spot and not have to reach into tackle box and possibly get cut on a conventional knife. This knife remains folded until needed.

This was used as a gift for my groomsmen. The knife handle was large enough to get a 12 character name engraved on it. However with my other knives I use for outdoor adventures and everyday use the lock could be a little more beefy. Other than that a very good quality item.

I fly into "Bush Alaska" for work, space is at a premimum and weight a consideration on the bush planes so it is nice to have a knife that functions well that is packable. Plan to get one for my brother-in-law.

Comments about Folding Filet Knife - Lake Bemidji Filet Knife:

I am giving this knife a less than favorable rating because of the design of the blade mechanism. I purchased this blade at the Mt Horeb store and was able to inspect it right away. The first blade I looked at had a problem because the blade action was loose and did not lock into position when fully opened. I didn't have much of a resistance when closing the blade. In short the blade could very easily slip posing a hazard.

I looked at a second blade and it slightly better resistance, and decided to purchase. But as I work with it more I realize this is not very good scenario. A large blade that rotates easily while you are working with it is not good.

I think the blade itself and quality of steel are just fine. But, as with all store bought knives, the initial edge is dull so I took it to a professional knife sharpener to get a decent edge. He noticed the action right away and was not happy with the engineering quality. He showed me a way to coax the the "stop" into position but I should not have to this with a knife right out of the box. And if I forget to coax it or it slips out of the position...danger. I will most likely return the knife, and I ask Duluth Trading to look at the rest of these knives for the same problem and have their manufacturer fix the problem.
