Thinking a lock pick purchase, even for home use should have more of a description or explanation that "picking" is not something you will pick up in a few minutes...

Comments about Duluth Trading Lock Pick - Lock Pick Tool:

You have to know how lock picking works in the first place, or you have to have the desire to learn. I have home made wrenches and picks of various sizes - I took up lock picking as a hobby out of college. What I like about this is that it is self contained, and the wrench is nice and long so you can hold it steady while holding the lock, and it gives good feedback.

My sense is that if you work with this tool regularly there are few limitations - you kind of have to get used to it. That said, you still have to have some skill, and understand locks. If you're interested in practicing with the tool, it'll work - but if you've never picked a lock before, this is no better or worse than anything else - in other words, it's not magic; it's just a good tool that's self contained.

The pick end, as depicted in the picture and as others have said, is wavy. It can be used with the large hump facing the pins, or flipped over so the tiny tip can push the pins. I think the design is quite nice. Someone asked why it was spring loaded - my theory is that you can adjust for different depths of the cylinder and lock it into place for your comfort - after all, it's about "feel". Just a guess though. Since I have a variety of picks, this self contained, single unit is comparatively great and seems pretty sturdy.

Bought four of these, one for myself and the other three as stocking stuffers for Christmas for people I work with who are always locking themselves out of somewhere. I used mine already at work. We have a desk and a file cabinet we've been afraid to lock because we couldn't find the keys. We locked both and used this lock pick to open them. We did practice on a couple of locks before to get used to the lock pick first.

Comments about Duluth Trading Lock Pick - Lock Pick Tool:

I started picking locks as a hobby back in high school (no, I wasn't a juvenile delinquent, but I was a *fan* of juvenile delinquency), and hadn't really practiced in years, but recently felt like finding out if I still had the touch. I decided to go with this tool mainly for convenience - easier to stop in at DTC on my way home from work than wait for a delivery from Joe's Reputable Online Emporium - but I had my doubts about an all-in-one tool like this.

Compared to a standard pick kit, this is something of a compromise. Rather than a variety of (usually) L-shaped picks for different sizes and styles of locks, this uses a single pick with a wavy point, providing different-sized "humps" to manipulate the lock pins with. The upshot is that it's often tough to probe individual pins, and can be very challenging to work on small locks. However, it certainly works! (And it turns out that yes, I do still have the touch).

The big advantage I see over a set of loose picks is portability and durability. I can throw this thing in a pack with a bunch of other tools and not have to worry about losing bits and pieces. It seems solidly built, though some things about the design still puzzle me, like why the pick is spring-loaded, or if there wasn't a better way to store the tension wrench (which doubles as a pocket clip) than holding it in place with a thumbscrew, but I really do like the fact that it's a self-contained tool, not a collection of things rattling around in a case or something.

Keep in mind that of course there's nothing magic about this device - you're going to have to practice a while before you can reliably open anything more secure than a cheap file cabinet - but it's a well-made little tool and should serve you well whether you're looking for an amusing pastime, or planning on using it for more practical purposes.

Learned on simple locks - those on a filing cabinet at work. Have since picked my deadbolt & all other locks at work. BTW, I own "work" :).

I would suggest learning BEFORE you need to use this in the real world, but I look forward to NOT paying 300 to have a locksmith come out on a holiday weekend to unlock my seasonal camper.

Comments about Duluth Trading Lock Pick - Lock Pick Tool:

There are lots of Master padlocks at work and confusion over who has the keys - lots of waiting around for a keyholder to show up to unlock a job box. With this, I can let myself in quickly and get to work. Master locks leap open with a little practice. Definitely practice before you need the tool; there's a trick to it. Use a lot less pressure on the tension wrench than you think you'll need; a feather touch I found is what's needed for padlocks.

Cons: The screw that holds the rake in place will loosen off. You'll need to put some Loctite in there to hold it in place eventually; other than that, the tool works as advertised!
