STORY
Arizona’s Petrified Forest was originally established, in part, to protect a vast deposit of petrified wood dating back to the Late Triassic period. However, in the 100+ years since its establishment, visitors often struggle to resist the urge to remove wood from the park. Plagued with regret, bad luck, and remorse, many of those same visitors eventually return their ill-gotten souvenirs by mail, accompanied by “conscience letters.” Both letters and specimens end up on display in the Rainbow Forest Museum, which presents a fraction of the 1,200+ pages in the park’s archives — the oldest letter dates back to 1934. At turns humorous, tragic, superstitious, and profound, this book explores our shifting awareness of how mankind and the natural world intersect.
