STORY

Acquired from the time-tested Japanese method of preserving and fortifying wood by scorching it (shou sugi ban), we are proud to offer an extremely limited run of our American Felling and Hudson Bay Axes in the SSB finish. The Japanese practice of burning wood to strengthen it may seem antithetical to any notion of preservation, but since its first known use in 18th-century Japan it has been proven to protect against the elements and prolong the life of an axe handle for decades. The charred finish makes for a smooth pitch-black finish that simply can't be replicated with any paints or stains. Each of these straight-grain Appalachian hickory handles are surface-scorched, brushed, and oiled by hand in our workshop for a polished and durable finish. Each axe comes with a limited-edition black leather blade guard and sticker, while all other elements that make our axes so popular remain constant: drop-forged American-made 5160 alloy steel that is hardened to 54-56 HRC, with straight grain hickory handles.

NOTES

Best Made Offers two sizes of axes, the 4-lb. American Felling Axe and the 2-lb. Hudson Bay Axe. When deciding which one is right for you, first determine how and where the axe will be used. Our 4-lb. Felling Axe is perfect for the farm or homestead. It excels at general chopping, bucking, and splitting. This is an axe for larger wood. The smaller Hudson Bay is more suitable for camping. Its size makes it a perfect fit for the pack or canoe, and its lighter weight allows for swift brush clearing, limbing and kindling.
