Don’t Knock ‘Em Until You’ve Tried ‘Em!

“I don’t need no bleeping hiking poles!” Yeah, that’s what we said, too – until we took these Mountainsmith Rhyolite Hiking Poles out for a test-hike and concluded they’re about as essential on the trail as our hiking boots. On an uphill climb, the aluminum carbide tips bite into packed clay and scree, giving us mountain-goat like stability and balance. And more than once these poles saved us from taking a dunk as we hopped from rock to rock at creek crossings. Molded EVA handles and adjustable wrist straps provide a stress-free grip, while the spring-loaded anti-shock system fights fatigue from palm to shoulder joints. But when they really shone was on the downhill, where we lengthened them to help distribute body weight and reduce the impact of every step – taking the pressure off work-worn hips, knees and ankles. Felt so dang good, we practically polka-danced our way back to the trailhead!
